The assistant commissioner
crop production in the ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and
Fisheries, John Lodungokol has disclosed that the Ministry is looking forward
to releasing 30 tractors in each district across Karamoja sub region.
This follows
the successful piloting of the tractor project to enhance mechanization of
Agriculture in in the districts of Abim, Nabilatuk, Kaabong and Napak.
According to
Lodungokol, a concept for mechanization of agriculture in Karamoja was
generated and 17 tractors were released by the ministry for the piloting
project.
The tractors
were put up for hire, with farmers paying one hundred and twenty thousand
shillings for their fields to be ploughed.
Lodungokol
says according to the data captured, the tractors managed to plough over 200
acres across the region but wonders if the farmers will reap from the farm
proceeds because of the prolonged drought.
