Kotido district authorities
have destroyed 99 jerrycans of Waragi that was impounded in last year’s
operations against the sale of the illicit gin in the district.
Kotido DPC
Justus Tugaineyo while giving a brief said the disposition was overdue, noting
that according to a court order dated 22nd October 2022, the chief
magistrate had ordered for a total of 47 jerrycans to be destroyed and they
were trying to secure another court order so that they could destroy 130
jerrycans at once.
It was
however noted that of the 130 jerrycans in the stores, 26 jerrycans were found
empty and 5 at half way something Tugaineyo attributes to damages.
The exercise
was almost suspended by Kigozi Lameck the Kidepo region deputy police commander
who was skeptical about the issues surrounding the emptiness of the other
jerrycans and also lack of a court order for the destruction of the 83 other
jerrycans by the chief magistrate.
After a
standoff of close to 15 minutes, authorities agreed to destroy the 99 full
jerrycans but Ambrose Onoria the Kotido RDC tasked the DPC to come up with a
detailed accountability of the 26 jerrycans and also to expedite the
availability of the court order for the 83 jerrycans.
