The anti-corruption
coalition Uganda has echoed calls for government to pull up its socks and
support Karamoja sub-region to improve its performance in education.
While
addressing the press this morning at Rapona, Geoffrey Stephen Bazire from anti-corruption
coalition Uganda was dismayed that Karamoja as a region attained only 319 in
division one, which accounts for only 0.3% in the 2022 PLE.
Bazire noted
that even in the 2022 UCE exams, Nakapiripirit as a district did not score any single
first grade, something he says is a disgrace.
He pointed
out that despite several government and donor funded programs aimed at
supporting education in Karamoja, the region still registers poor performance
in the sector.
Among the
factor cited for the poor performance include teacher absenteeism, delayed
release of funds to districts, inadequate staff accommodation and low
remuneration among others.
Bazire
suggested that local governments and school management committees should
heighten monitoring and supervision of education services to curb teacher absenteeism,
provide adequate accommodation for all teaching staff and that the education
ministry should develop an affirmative action for recruitment and training of
professional teachers.
