Court has ordered 88
mothers from Napak district who have been sending children to Kampala city
streets to beg for money-to go back to their home district and engage in
productive work.
The mothers
appeared before the magistrate grade one at City hall in Kampala, where they
were charged with one count of sending a child to beg or solicit for alms in a
public place.
The offense
is contrary to section 101) and (4) of the Kampala capital city authority-child
protection ordinance 2022.
Aged between
20 and 35 years, the mothers were arrested with their children during the
non-alignment movement summit which took place in Kampala in January 2024.
All the
women pleaded guilty to the charge and requested court to help them go back to
Napak district where they hail from.
With teary
eyes, some of the mothers told the trial magistrate Edgar Karakire that they
would never come back to Kampala streets, having suffered enough.
The
magistrate sentenced them to community service in their places of abode in
Napak for one month, where in case of default, they face imprisonment for one
month.
