Police in Nakapiripirit district have
arrested four people including a truck driver on charges of possessing and
transporting 124 jerrycans of crude waragi.
The sino truck with registration number UAZ 691H was
intercepted at Namalu traffic checkpoint loaded with illicit waragi, following
a tip off.
According to police spokesperson for Karamoja Mike
Longole, the truck driver identified as Travers Mayanja says he was given the
waragi from Kikindu market in Mbale to deliver to Moroto to an unidentified
contact.
Longole says the five suspects including four men and
a woman are being detained at Namalu police station as investigations into the
matter continue.
Several voices have echoed the call for crude waragi
to be banned from Karamoja due to its impacts on the health as well as
productivity of the local people in the sub-region.
