The Uganda Wild Life Authority-UWA official is concerned that
insecurity is frustrating their efforts to realize revenue from Tourism at
Matheniko- Bokora World life reserves.
Initially, gazetted in 1964 as game reserves, the
wildlife reserves measure approximately 3,500 square kilometers and managed as
protected constituent areas under the Mt. Elgon conservation area.
The two reserves are home to important wildlife species
including; Lesser Kudu’s, brights Gazelles, ostriches, leopards, cheetahs,
buffalos among other wildlife species.

Bokora-Matheniko wild life reserve the resurgence of insecurity in the region
has greatly scared away tourists who fear for their lives.
According to Matanda raiders are using the reserve has
their hiding area before and after raiding adding that these barbaric
activities hinder the growth and smooth running of the two reserves.
Matanda also revealed that the limited human resource to
man the 3500 square kilometers, poor infrastructure is other challenges
affecting the reserve management

Matanda has appealed to the communities in Karamoja
to embrace peace so that the tourism industry in Karamoja grows.
