A total of 23 journalists operating in Karamoja sub region and the
Uganda People’s Defense Forces today held several activities to mark the World
Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 03 of every year.
Some of the activities included cleaning around the Moroto central
market, the abattoir cell one of the dirtiest places in the Moroto municipality
commercial hub, South Division among others.
The theme of the international event is, “Shaping a future of
rights; freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.”
Earlier, the journalists discussed the challenges faced in Karamoja
while on duty.
Godfrey Eyoku-Uganda Radio Network says the community have not
understood the value of the media, adding during interviews they demand for
cash and even the local leaders are not cooperative.
Timothy Eodu, from Akicha FM says insecurity has derailed efforts
of journalism, as most of them do not go to the field for fear of their life.
To this, Eodu asked security forces to handle the matter with
urgency.
Not only insecurity, Eodu says the low pay has also let down
professionalism in the sub region saying most people have quit journalism due
to poor pay.
Munirah Suwed-Ateker FM news editor decries the intimidation by the
community and local leaders.
She says the people have to understand that journalism is not a
crime but passion to ensure the community understands what lies ahead and
around them.
The UPDF public relations officer Maj. Isaac Oware stressed that
the army recognizes the sacrifices, commitment and contribution of journalists
in Karamoja.
