Kotido RDC Ambrose Onoria has
expressed fear that a number of reformed cattle rustlers who had voluntarily
handed over their guns are backsliding to rearm themselves.
In May this year, President Yoweri
Museveni, while meeting leaders from Karamoja, Acholi and Lango sub-regions
granted amnesty to the cattle rustlers still harboring illegal firearms and
promised to offer them alternative source of livelihood.
Onoria says much as a number of
them responded by returning the illegal
guns in their possession, some are said to have rearmed themselves in
desperation after failing to receive government incentives as promised by
government.
While receiving the first batch of the
iron sheets meant for the reformed Karachunas from the office of the prime
minister on Tuesday at the Kotido district headquarters, Onoria said as the
security officials, they have widened their network and will leave no stone
unturned in addressing such issues that may make them plunge back in the fight
to rid the region of illegal guns.
Onoria says much as the first batch
of iron sheets may not be enough for all
the reformed karachunas who have voluntarily surrendered their guns, they can
take advantage of the already existing government programs like the ongoing PDM
program in order to improve on their livelihood .
