Kotido deputy RDC John
Magezi has cautioned the general public against possession and misuse of military
attire, saying this is in accordance with a circular dated the 1st
September 2023 and issued to all the security organs across the country by the
Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs.
In the circular,
the ministry of Defense through its Spokesperson Brigadier General Felix
Kulaigye said the ministry is worried about the increasing number of civilians
in possession of military attires like berets, lanyards and clothing among
others.
Kulaigye
says this contravenes section 160 of the UPDF act 2005 sub section 2 part “C”
that prohibits none members of the security forces from receiving, possessing,
or delivering any such attire aforementioned.
He also
stated that the Ministry on the 18th September 2019 issued a general
notice prohibiting the general public from donning military wears and
decorations or something resembling them, adding that this invites legal
action.
Magyezi now
wants those still in possession of the military attires and those that have
resemblance to the military attire to hand them over to the nearest security
authorities so that they do not come in conflict with the laws.
