Locals residing around River Omaniman in Lopei Sub County- in Napak
district have turned mosquito nets distributed by government to combat malaria
to carry out fishing activities.
The locals
who converge in the afternoon hours for fishing activities are always visibly
using the mosquito nets to catch majorly cat fish which they sell in the
neighboring Matany town council.
A fisher man
who preferred anonymity says they are using mosquito nets because of the high
prices and lack of the fishing nets in the nearby market, adding that the
nearest point they can get the fishing nets is Soroti city.
The fisher
man adds that the costs they incur in obtaining fishing nets are too high, compared
to low prices of fish due to the high supply.
