Namalu sub county
chairperson Tom Olaka has revealed that his sub county which is also the food
basket of Karamoja sub region, has this planting season registered a low
harvest.
Olaka has
attributed the low harvest to insecurity, pest and diseases as well as drought
among others.
According to
Olaka, suspected Pokot armed warriors invaded parts of his sub county, forcing
farmers to flee and abandon their gardens, adding that they also grazed their
animals on people’s plantations.

Aurelia
Lokwii a farmer and resident of Namalu sub county says she planted sun flower,
beans, maize, soya beans and rice but wondered whether she will recover from
the loses she has encountered in this planting season.
Lokwii says
the harvest were not as expected, blaming it on insecurity, pests and diseases.

The
sub-county chairman predicts that hunger might once again strike the entire sub-region
and also called for governments and other stake holders’ intervention so that
lives are not lost in Karamoja.
