Matany town council authorities have teamed up with a section of
parents in a bid to curb down the number of street kids within the town
council.
Daniel
Korobe the Urban chairperson Matany town council says they have been grappling
with the plight of street children who loiter around the town council begging
for assistance as well as engaging in criminal activities like gambling, pick
pocketing, house breaking and smoking of opium among others.
Korobe says
this prompted authorities to hold a security meeting that resolved to engage
parents through sensitizations on the dangers of letting the children to loiter
on the streets and the importance of keeping them in school.
He adds that
the decision was embraced by parents, with a section of them volunteering to
carry out operations, leading to the arrest of some street children who were later
reunited with their families.
