The state minister for
Animal industry Lt Col Bright Rwamirama has blamed the low crop productivity in
Karamoja sub region on the negative attitude of the men in the region.
Rwamirama
who was in the region recently for the launch of the mass vaccination campaign accused
men of focusing only on livestock as a major source of livelihood, leaving
women to battle with farm work.
According to
Rwamirama, in western Uganda where people also depend on livestock, men engage
in both activities by supporting women in farm work, adding that this gesture
ensures that their families are food secure.
He noted that
if the men in Karamoja embrace crop production, grow variety of crops that are
conversant with climate and follow the timely guidelines of the Agric-extension
workers, issues related to hunger in the sub-region would be permanently
addressed.
Rwamirama tasked
local authorities together with the Agric-extension workers to scale up
sensitization of the locals on the possibilities of practicing crop production
alongside livestock production.
