Authorities in Nabilatuk are devising strategies to boost the low
latrine coverage in the district.
Paul Lokol
the LC 5 chairperson says currently according to statistics the district has
realized a drop in the latrine usage and coverage from 60 percent in 2022/2023
financial year to 20 percent in 2023/2024.
Lokol
attributes the drop to the phasing out of NGO’s Implementing Water and
Sanitation activities in the district and is worried that this puts the
district at a risk of disease outbreak related to poor sanitation.
To this,
Lokol says they have convened a meeting with top authorities in the district
and among other things they proposed is to hold the salaries of the public
servants and local leaders in sub counties across the district until they
construct pit latrines in their homes.
According to
chair, the district has 20 district councilors, over 500 civil servants and
over 1000 local leaders and if all are implored to have latrines then it would
address latrine usage and coverage issues.

Lokol adds
that after registering a success in implementing this proposed plan, they will
then target the business persons and all those who earn but have failed to have
latrines in their homes.
He advised
those who don’t have the capacity to construct a well improved latrine to
construct temporary ones so as not to be penalized.
