Charcoal burners in
Napumpum Sub County have appealed to the government and other development
partners to render support to them that can sustain them so that they abandon
the charcoal business.
The plea was
made during a meeting on the 27th February organized by Karamoja
Peace and Environment Protection Service-KAPEPS at Loperu kabek, Nakongumutu
central in Napumpum to sensitize the charcoal burners against the dangers of
felling trees.
Loila Peter
Tinanya the chairperson of the group pointed out poverty, hunger and cattle
raids by the neighboring Turkana and the Matheniko as being the major factor
that has forced them into charcoal burning in order to fend for their families.
He called
upon government and the development partners to support them with Oxen,
Ox-ploughs and farm inputs so that they can alternate charcoal burning with
farming.
Akore John
Bosco Jokitau -KAPEPS coordinator advised the charcoal burners to embrace
government programs like PDM and UWEP and find alternative ways of meeting
their needs.
Akore
appealed to the district to consider such groups of people when it comes to
benefiting from government programs so that they can refrain from practices
that endanger the environment.
