National forestry
authority-NFA has auctioned 125 bags of charcoal, after they were impounded by
police from various points.
While
auctioning the charcoal at the NFA Offices yesterday, Jonas Richard Ogen, NFA
sector manager for Moroto, Nakapiripiriti and Napak said this is one way of
implementing the presidential order 3 issued on charcoal burning given on 19th
may 2023.
Ogen says
the forestry cover in Karamoja has been over powered by the charcoal business
which under mines the national tree planting and forestry act of 2023.
He added
that all the climatic change challenges have come because of the pressure
exerted on environment especially the green cover leading to other greenhouse
effects.
He disclosed
that more than 5 trucks of charcoal are still pending court order for
auctioning.
Meanwhile
Justin Tuko the deputy RDC Moroto has appealed to the locals to opt for
alternative business rather charcoal burning and Waragi.
He cautioned
that no one will be spared if found engaging in illegal business in the region.
