Nine people have been
detained by police in North Karamoja alone as the Presidential Affairs
Committee launches investigations into the theft of Karamoja relief items.
The
detainees include District Veterinary Officers and OPM coordinators directly
involved in the diversion of relief items.
The
sub-committee Chairperson Onekalit Denis Amere who also doubles as Kitgum
municipality MP says even ministers found guilty will not be spared.
Onekalit
says preliminary findings indicate that several district officials, and OPM
coordinators were part of the scandal.
In Kotido
district, records show that out of the eighteen thousand goats expected, only
fourteen thousand four hundred and fifty-six were delivered moreover highly
priced
In December
2021, parliament passed a supplementary budget of 39 billion shillings to
support livelihood programs in Karamoja.
Of this, 22
billion shillings was to purchase goats while five billion was for procuring
100,000 pieces of iron sheets. Each beneficiary was to receive 26 iron sheets
and 16 goats but these items have largely been mismanaged.
The
committee is now set to present its findings and the people of Karamoja and
Uganda at large awaits to see what will befall the culprits.
