Over 391 civilians and 30
security personnel have lost their lives because of cattle raids in Karamoja
and neighboring districts since July 2021 up to June 2023.
While
addressing the media at the MT Moroto regional police headquarters recently,
the Anti-Stock Theft Unit police commandant commissioner of police Elias
Kasirabo revealed that over 391 civilians were killed by armed Karimojong
warriors while 612 survived with injuries.
Kasirabo
added that over 40 security operatives from both Uganda police and Uganda
People Defense Forces sustained injuries during operations, ambush by the
warriors or while trailing raided animals.
According to
Kasirabo this insecurity has been directly or indirectly fueled by the cattle
traders promoting commercialized raiding.
Kasirabo
also blamed the LC1 chairpersons for issuing letters to traders they don’t know
which allows them to access markets with stolen animals.
Between July
2021 up to date, over 47000 animals including donkeys, goats, sheep and cattle
have been stolen and so far 37419 have been recovered in counter offensive
operations and others in Markets while 9581 were never recovered.
