Over 90 bags of charcoal have been impounded
along Moroto-Nakapiripirit road, in an operation mounted by both the police and
national forestry authority on Saturday.
Joint security forces in
conjunction with NFA have continued to impound charcoal in Karamoja, as they
implement the presidential executive order number three.
In an operation mounted yesterday,
Police spokesperson for Karamoja, Mike Longole confirmed the arrest of 95 bags
of charcoal.
Longole says despite
continuous sensitization against charcoal burning, some people have
persistently ignored the warnings, citing communities in Lokapel junction,
Nakoit, Cornerkapel, Koomo and Alekilek among others.
The police spokesperson
cautioned that the forces will not relent but continue to apprehend those
caught burning and selling charcoal and they will be prosecuted in the courts
of law.
However, a section of
members of the public have accused the police to be the biggest beneficiaries
of the impounded charcoal, especially when it is auctioned by the National
forestry authority.
They claim that the big
shots buy the biggest chunk of the charcoal and very little is left for members
of the public.
Longole however says
everyone is entitled to buying the impounded charcoal once auctioned, including
police officers.
