Nabilatuk district chairperson Paul Lokol has expressed fears of
anthrax outbreak in the district, following the death of a cow Nachegiritolim.
According to
Lokol, residents of Nachegiritolim notified the district leadership on Saturday
of a bull that had registered similar signs and symptoms of anthrax prompting
the district veterinary team to swing into action.
Lokol says
samples have been collected by the veterinary team for forwarding to the
ministry of Agriculture, Animal husbandry and Fisheries laboratories for
analysis.
Anthrax is a
rare but serious disease caused by a spore-forming bacterium, Bacillus
anthracis and mainly affects livestock and wild game.
Animals with
anthrax die suddenly after registering signs of high fever and blood present
around the nose, mouth and other openings.
Lokol says
the district has held an emergency meeting with the technical team and have
tasked the sub county extension officers to be on alert and report any similar
cases and also sensitize the locals.
He adds that
they have also halted trading in animals and are currently consulting with the
technical team at the ministry for proper guidance on how to manage the
situation.
The district
boss appealed to the locals in Nabilatuk district whose animals register such
symptoms or die not to eat the meat since it puts their lives at a risk
