Police in South Karamoja in
collaboration with district forest officials are set to embark on community
sensitization to popularize the presidential order on charcoal burning.
Police
spokesperson for Karamoja, Mike Longole says the move is intended to avoid
taking the community unaware.
Longole says
to this, the district police commander has directed DPCs to team up with
district officials to have the directive implemented.
The main
charcoal burning points in South Karamoja are sighted along Lokapel-Nabilatuk
road at Lotede village and around Nakoit, Moroto-Nakapiripirit road at
Kamusalaba, Lomuria, Akoriang, Lokapel junction and Acerer.
Other points
are Moroto-Soroti road at Kautakou, Morulinga, Lokiteded, corner Kapel,
Nakichumet, Lomuria Angalepan, Koomo and Alekilek among other areas.
According to
the police mouthpiece Longole, the force has impounded three trucks loaded with
over 200 bags of charcoal, following the presidential executive order.
The
executive order number three was signed by president Museveni on the 19th
of May 2023 to bring to an end commercial charcoal burning.
