Police in Karamoja under
the anti-stock theft unit have reduced the number of exit routes for trucks
carrying livestock out of Karamoja in a bid to curb commercial raids.
According to
police, the move will ease verification of animals.
Police
mouthpiece for Karamoja, Mike Longole says a number of raided animals are taken
to various cattle markets all over Karamoja by thieves and are eventually
bought and transported out of the region through the various routes.
Longole
argues that this has made recovery efforts difficult by the security forces.
In the
latest communication from police, all trucks carrying livestock from Amudat,
Nakapiripirit and Nabilatuk must use the Nakapiripirit-Moroto road, joining the
Moroto-Soroti road where the animals will be verified at the Nadunget
checkpoint.
On the other
hand, trucks carrying livestock from Kaabong and Kotido must use
Kaabong-Kotido-Moroto road, where documents will be verified from Nadunget then
join Moroto-Soroti road as exit route.
The force
has urged cattle traders to follow the guidelines in order to avoid
inconveniences.
