President Yoweri Museveni has granted clemency to 19 political
prisoners affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), who were recently
convicted of various offenses.
The
pardoned individuals, convicted last month, faced charges including treachery
and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Among
them is Olivia Lutaaya, a mother of
two, who was arrested in 2021 at her Namuwongo home and detained incommunicado
for weeks before being charged at a military court.
The individuals
were detained following the events of November 2020 and had been held on
treason and illegal ammunition possession charges.
Although
they initially denied the allegations, they entered a plea bargain last month,
resulting in prison sentences of three months and 22 days.
State
Minister for Youth, Balaam Barugahara, commended the President for his
decision, expressing gratitude on behalf of the pardoned individuals.
