Joint security forces say they are on
standby to handle any emerging issues of insecurity in Amudat, following
reported conflict between the Pokot and Sabiny communities in the district.
In a statement released by
Karamoja police spokesperson, Mike Longole, information is making rounds,
indicating that the Pokot community is set to chase away all the Sabiny people
residing in Amudat.
Longole says the information
is purported to have originated from a meeting chaired by the RDC Amudat and
attended by the deputy RDC, the district chairman, sub-county councilors, LC1
and LC111 chairpersons, elders and some community members.
He cautioned that such a
resolution contravenes the constitution of the republic of Uganda, saying as
security forces, they are ready to quash such acts that may cause blood shed
between the two communities.
Longole noted that the
leadership in the district should instead work towards unifying the two
communities, warning that they will arrest such leaders for inciting violence.
He intimated that the
conflict between the Pokot and Sabiny could have stemmed from when the Sabiny
denied the Pokot herders from grazing their animals from their area, citing
insecurity which is always caused by the herdsmen once they cross over.
The police mouthpiece says
they have deployed in the district to ensure the resolutions passed by Amudat
district leadership are not implemented.
