30 elders between the ages
of 60-79 years are set to benefit from the Special Enterprise Grant for Elderly
persons-SEGOP project being piloted in Moroto municipality.
3 groups of
10 elders each who are not beneficiaries of SAGE are to receive 5million
shillings grant from government through the ministry of gender, labor and
social development to start enterprenual projects in order to improve
livelihoods.
During the
launch at the South division headquarters in Moroto Municipality, 2 groups of
Lokare elderly group and Campswahili Juu produce buying and selling groups
received 5Million shillings each to execute their investment plans whereas
Campswahili Juu water supply group is yet to receive its grant.
Ismael
Mohamed, the mayor Moroto Municipality urged the beneficiaries to keep on their
initial plan not to use the money for marriage, alcohol or buying luxuries.
Mohamed says
that a number of projects have been misused and money wasted, leaving many
people in extreme poverty.
Peter Ayopo
66 years applauded government for the grant which to him came as the long
awaited and needed savior of the majority elders who do not benefit from the
SAGE.

SEGOP
project was launched by president Museveni in 2023 in different regions of the
country targeting active economic elders, and the project is to run for 5 years
in pilot study before full scale implementation.
