The United Nations
Children's Fund-UNICEF has today handed over to Kotido district authorities the
Nachuma multi use water scheme built in Longaroe Sub County.
The 250
million dollars 60,000 liters water storage scheme, with a mega pumping
strength of 8,000 liters per hour is expected to serve residents of Longaroe
Sub County, other neighboring villages, primary schools and the health center
among others.
Speaking
during the handover ceremony at the district headquarters, Joseph Lomongin
-Kotido district CAO commended the intervention of UNICEF in building the mega
water project, saying this will now address the major concerns raised regarding
access to and shortage of clean water by the residents of Longaroe.
Lomongin
noted that access to and shortage of clean water has majorly affected the
district, with children being the most affected because of water borne related
illnesses.

Kotido

water and sanitation services to schools that lack access to clean water and
also erecting establishments like Nachuma in other water stressed sub counties.

Etleva
Kadilli- the UNICEF South and East African representative who was flanked by Dr.
Munir Safieldin the UNICEF country director for Uganda in response said as an
agency they are committed to ensuring that they better the lives of children.
Etleva argues
that despite the partners’ commitment in mitigating these issues, the district
leadership should also work harder to ensure they achieve positive results in
fighting the numerous challenges faced by children and those that affect their
growth.
