The UPDF under the third
division has termed as dangerous, the call by local leaders to be armed by forces,
as a way of protecting themselves.
Addressing the media at the third division headquarters in Moroto
district yesterday, the division commander Maj.Gen. Don Nabasa said it is their
mandate to protect the lives and property of the Karimojong and Ugandans at
large.
Nabasa likened the call to rearming of civilians, something he says will
cause more insecurity in the sub-region.
The commander instead called for a concerted effort from every one in
Karamoja to report those with illegal guns in order for security to swing into
appropriate action.
A number of local leaders particularly LC3 chairpersons in Karamoja have
expressed fear for their lives after about five of their colleagues have been
killed by suspected warriors.
The leaders have appealed for arms from security forces in defense of themselves,
a call rejected by authorities in security circles.
