Authorities at Kidepo National Park have rallied the locals
bordering the national park and those who have suffered losses caused by wild
animals to always ensure proper documentation so that they are easily
compensated for the damages.
Martin
Oryem- the Assistant warden community conservation Kidepo area says people who
have been inconvenienced by stray wild animals through damaging of plantations
and loss of lives have poorly documented the incidences thus affecting the processes
of compensation claims.
According to
Oryem, documentation of these incidences is one of the requirements considered
in order to compensate a victim and if it’s poorly done it limits the chances
of one being compensated.
Oryem cites
instances where victims lodge complaints to the wrong authorities at the higher
levels instead of starting with their area LC 1 chairperson and the scouts
present at the different hot spots and this should be within 72 hours.
He adds that
when these authorities inform them at the park; they swing into action and
render the necessary support in case of accidents and death but face
difficulties when following on the cases due to poor documentation.
He says such
irregularities also raise questions from the government valuer, which could
lead to less or no compensation.

On delayed
compensation claims, Oryem says the verification committees are overwhelmed
with the number of compensation complaints emerging from the whole country,
appealing for patience from complainants.
