A woman has been shot dead and her husband injured following a
deadly shooting on Wednesday night in Moroto district.
The incident happened at Atedeoi Primary School, Rupa Sub County, a
distance of 15 kilometres North of Moroto district.
The couple, who are both teachers, have been identified as Chebet
Joy 26, and Chepusikor Peter 37- a deputy head teacher of the school
respectively.
AIP Mike Longole, the Karamoja police spokesperson when contacted
described the incident as unfortunate, saying the police are on the ground to
handle investigations.
He says the thugs climbed over the school fence and headed to the
staff quarters in the cover of darkness.
According to Longole, the bandits found the teacher at his
verandah, attending to his phone before asking him the whereabouts of the owner
of the home.
He adds that the Chepusikor instead got up and entered the house and
flung the metallic door behind him, an issue that could have injured the
gunmen.
Longole says the bandits immediately went to the window and crushed
the panes and began discharging bullets inside the house.
The police mouthpiece however, says the motive is not yet known
adding that it could be they wanted money from the roadside stall the family
operates or just wanting to kill.
The woman died on spot, whereas her one year old baby had one of
his leg shattered by a bullet.
The child and her father are currently getting treatment at the
Moroto regional referral hospital while Chebet’s lifeless body lies in the
mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Meanwhile, two teachers of the same school have been arrested in
connection with the murder and have recorded statements.
