A total of 5300 women and
girls are being targeted in a leadership, empowerment, access and
protection-LEAP project, which will be implemented in 4 district of Uganda.
During an
inception meeting held at Rapona hotel Moroto yesterday, the programs manager
FAWE Joseph Adiama revealed that the districts of Moroto, Kaabong, Isingiro and
Kisoro have been considered to benefit in the project costed at over 980M
shillings.
Adiama says
the LEAP project targets people especially the vulnerable and the marginalized
to help them acquire equitable access and utilization of quality basic social
and protection services in refugee camps and areas affected by drought.
He noted that
during the project lifespan, women and girls will be given psycho-social
support, entrepreneur training and support through saving groups of 30 people,
education support among others.
Jenifer
Longoli the senior district development officer Moroto said the project is
timely since there were no harvests realized by framers in the region due to
prolonged drought in the region.
Longoli
believes that with women being the main food providers in homes in Karamoja and
with the financial support extended to them, there will be a fair investment
that will help provide for their families.
