Over 200 young people in Moroto converged at the Cooperation and
Development-C and D premises to participate in various sporting activities, in
a bid to promote and foster peace.
The event
held under the theme “sports for peace” was targeted at bringing young people
together to engage in various activities which encourage the spirit of teamwork
and catering for the wellbeing of one another.
The week-long
activity spearheaded by development partners led by Focolare movement brought
together children to participate in games designed to foster love, unity and
mutual respect.
Chris Onyonka,
the program coordinator Focolare movement noted that they partnered with other
development organisations to use the power of sports to generate positive
change in children living in conflict affected Karamoja sub-region.
The games
included swing the tree, directing water through the gutter, spider web and
passing the ball among others.
On his side,
Dr. Alois Hechenberger, the project inventor-Sports for peace noted that many children
in Karamoja are often out of school, spending their days in herding animals or
working in gardens.
Dr. Alois
says such an initiative provides a much-needed break from these
responsibilities and offers a platform for them to learn essential values in a
playful and supportive environment.
The director
Cooperation and Development Kul Chandra highlighted the importance of
supporting the children of Karamoja, if the region is to achieve sustainable
development.
The games
were concluded today at Naoi catholic parish playground, attracting hundreds of
participants.
