Police in Napak district
have intercepted 21 people suspected to be victims of trafficking, as they
headed to Amuria district in Teso sub-region.
According to
police spokesperson for Karamoja, Mike Longole, the group comprising six women
and 15 children were intercepted in Lorengechora by police with the aid of the
local community.
Longole has
identified the women as Maria Longoli, Losike Lucia, Nangiro Margaret, Nate
Martina, Angella Lucia and Chegem Rakele.
All the 21
suspected victims of trafficking are residents of Lokeriaut village in Nadunget
sub-county, Moroto district.
However, the
suspected victims claim they were moving to go and search for informal
employment and survival, adding that their movement was prompted by hunger.
According to
Longole, five perpetrators of trafficking including two men and three women
have been arrested and of these, a man and a woman have been convicted in the
courts of law as the others are still on remand.
